Galuchat scent bottle

Round flattened scent bottle made of Galuchat (or shagreen).  Silver mount and round cap. Tiny suspension rings on the shoulders.                                                                                       Shagreen is the tanned skin of a shark or a stingray: usually the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula). This skin is very hard and durable but, because of its high production cost, is used only for valuable objects. The name come from Jean Claude Galuchat, a French craftsman who was the first one to use this kind of material: he worked for Louis XIV. silver globular hinged cap marked for silver; small handles for missing suspension chain.

During the 30s Galuchat became the collector’s favourite precious material. Many famous designers created any kind of boxes and even furniture. At this period dates this scent bottle.
