Chatelain blue glass scent bottle, souvenir of the Universal Exhibition in Paris – 1900
Blue glass tear shaped scent bottle showing a white cartouche showing The Palace of Electricity: due to Mr. Hénard while the Château d’Eau was the work of Mr. Paulin, it is at the bottom of the Champ de Mars; the facade, light and complicated, seems the unreal architecture of a palace of the Thousand and One Nights; it is a lace of glass and metal, studded with precious stones; at the top stands the very image of the goddess, standing on a chariot hitched with hippogriph and haloed whole with a crystal sun; in front of the Palace, rises a monumental Château d’Eau: from its porch springs cascades which roll and spread, from degree to degree, to the lawns of the Champ de Mars.
The 1900s Universal Show is the fifth World Exhibition organized in Paris after 1855, 1867, 1878 and 1889. It was inaugurated on April 14 by President Emile Loubet, then opened to the public on April 15th. It ends on November 12, after 212 days of opening. It hosts more than 50 million visitors.
An iconic event of Belle Epoque, whose theme is “The balance of a century”, left several buildings in Paris, including the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais.
